Dive Trip · Late July 2026

The Keys, with a Palm Beach alternate

A week of reef diving out of Key Largo, plus one alternate that swaps the front two days for the Atlantic coast. Lobster mini-season and Mom's maybe-flight decide the small stuff.

Divers — Dad (Advanced, ~100 dives) + daughter (Open Water + Nitrox, ~20 dives)
Also along — Mom (non-diver; wants the Keys; may fly home Tue 7/28)
When — Leave Baton Rouge Thu Jul 23; home by Fri Jul 31, weekend to recover
Shape — Baton Rouge → Venice → the Keys → home (two cars: daughter back to Venice, Dad straight home)
The constraint

Lobster mini-season, July 29–30

Florida's 2-day recreational lobster season falls Wed July 29 – Thu July 30, 2026. Who it actually affects:

Three quick truths

Mom

She wants the Keys (never been) and would rather we prioritize diving over beach — so Key Largo the whole time is the front-runner, even if she flies out.

Gear · cars

Both bring full gear (tanks only, no rental), and with two cars Dad drives straight home from Key Largo at the end while daughter heads back to Venice — ~3.5 hr saved.

Her flight

Undecided. If Mom flies Tue 7/28 we lose that Tuesday; if not, Tuesday is a bonus dive or an Islamorada day.

Two options

Option ① · front-runner

Key Largo — the whole time

4–5 dive days · 1 region · cheapest

What Mom wants, most diving, least driving. If she flies out Tuesday, you just lose that day.

Option ② · alternate

Palm Beach → Key Largo

4 dive days · 2 regions · +$75–150/diver

Swaps Sun–Mon for the Atlantic coast: dive variety + real beaches, more driving. Only if that appeals.

Date ① Key Largo — whole time ② Palm Beach → Key Largo
Thu 7/23Depart Baton Rouge (PM); overnight en routeSame

Sat 7/25Venice shark-tooth AM; PM with daughter's friends; overnight VeniceSame
Sun 7/26Leave Venice AM → drive to Key Largo (~4.5 hr); PM settle / beach with MomLeave Venice AM → drive to Singer Island (~3 hr); PM Atlantic beach with Mom

Tue 7/28 Flexible day.Mom stays: dive, or an Islamorada day.
Mom flies: airport run (Key Largo↔MIA ~1h15, ~3 hr round trip) — lose the morning, maybe salvage a PM dive.
Travel day — drive south to Key Largo (~3 hr).Mom flies: drop her at FLL on the way (adds almost nothing).
Wed 7/29Key Largo — full day (AM + PM reef)Key Largo — full day (AM + PM reef)

Fri 7/31Dad drives home (overnight Thu ~Gainesville/Lake City); daughter to VeniceSame

Mon 8/3Back to workSame

Thursday: base plan is an AM dive then a ~noon departure, so Dad reaches mid-Florida that night and is home Friday with the weekend to recover. Squeeze a 2nd Thursday dive if you'd rather — just push the departure to ~5–6 PM.

Lean Option ①

Pick ①

Key Largo the whole time. It's what Mom wants, it's the most diving and the least driving, and it's the cheapest. If she flies out Tuesday, you only lose that day — not the trip.

Do ② only if

you decide the Atlantic dive variety and real Singer Island beaches are worth ~$75–150/diver more and the extra miles — which Mom has effectively set aside.

Book now

The Wed–Thu Key Largo core is identical in both, so lock that first. Decide the Sun–Tue front end once Mom's flight firms up.

Rough cost (per diver — own gear, tanks only)

  • Venice shark-tooth: ~$175 — the priciest single day, first to cut if budget bites.
  • Key Largo 2-tank reef: ~$99 à la carte → ~$85–90/trip on a Rainbow Reef multi-trip package (3-pack $270 / 5-pack $425).
  • No gear rental (you own it); no Nitrox surcharge in the Keys (reef trips run on air).
  • ≈ $450–525 per diver for ~4 dive days incl. Venice → ~$900–1,050 for the two of you.
  • A 5th day (Tuesday, if Mom stays) adds ~$85–99. Option ② adds ~$75–150/diver (Nitrox + lost package + gas).

Operators

Key Largo

  • Rainbow Reef · 305-451-7171
Big, smooth, well-run (boats up to 25–29), ~$99 2-tank, packages to ~$85. Size is the only knock — a fair trade at our level. Confirmed to run full reef schedules through mini-season (7/29–30), when the small six-packs may be on lobster. Likely the workhorse — verify the small ops first.
  • Conch Republic · 305-852-1655
Recommended for beginner divers (pairs with Rainbow Reef); has a true six-pack boat.
  • Silent World
Recommended (ScubaBoard); relaxed small-group reef (max 14), ~$105–135.
  • Quiescence · 305-451-2440
Private max-6 boat (~$595 for our group) — the splurge "signature day."
  • Island Ventures / Horizon
Small-to-mid boats; Horizon also seems to run through mini-season.

Palm Beach / Jupiter (Option ② · 7/26–28)

  • Jupiter Dive Center · 561-745-7807
The one Dad liked; 40-ft boats. Reefs 60–90 ft, stronger drift — a step up for her, fine with Dad as buddy. She boards on Nitrox.
  • Pura Vida Divers · 561-840-8750
Gentle ~1-kt Riviera reefs + the Blue Heron Bridge operator.
  • Kyalami · 855-575-3483
42-ft boat, Open-Water minimum; milder Palm Beach reefs.
  • All go lobster-only (Advanced) on 7/29–30.

Venice (shark-tooth, Sat AM)

  • Aristakat · 941-321-0852
    ~$175/diver; 4-diver minimum — call to confirm.
  • Top 2 Bottom · 941-525-8744
    Biggest, most comfortable boat.
  • Keys Huka · 305-609-7725
Casey Key departure; scuba or snorkel.
  • Backup: hunt teeth from shore at Caspersen Beach at low tide.

Lodging, limits, airport & conditions

Lodging (Hotels.com, Sun–Thu 7/26–30 — confirm at booking)

Off-peak but still a Keys premium (~$170–320/night in Key Largo vs. ~$80 mainland). Full ranked list is in the working doc — highlights below; Mom (and what everyone splits) makes the call. Wed/Thu are lobster mini-season, so lock it soon.

Best value with a beach (the 3 of us):

Just the two divers (cheap + near the boats): Courtyard $161 (walk-to-boat), Waterside Suites $173 (walk to Rainbow Reef), or Amoray $237 / Holiday Inn $207 (boats at the dock). Beach irrelevant.

Next to check: VRBO / Airbnb — a 1–2BR waterfront rental with a kitchen (~$200–350) can beat these for 3 adults (separate bedroom for Mom + a kitchen for the divers). Not priced yet. Playa Largo $319 is the splurge; skip Ocean Pointe, Kona Kai, Bayside, Gilbert's.

What she can dive (Open Water + Nitrox)

Max 60 ft / 18 m, no overhead, no Advanced-only dives — fine for everything here. The deep wrecks (Spiegel Grove ~130 ft, Duane / Bibb ~120 ft), the deep Atlantic reefs, and the lobster trips are Advanced-gated — save those for a future Advanced trip (ideally Jupiter in Aug–Oct for the goliath grouper aggregation).

Airport — only if Mom flies Tue 7/28

RouteDrive time
Key Largo ↔ MIA~1 h 15
Key Largo ↔ FLL~1 h 35
Palm Beach ↔ FLL~1 h 05
Palm Beach ↔ MIA~1 h 45

Option ① (Keys): closest is MIA — a ~3 hr round trip that costs Tuesday morning. Option ② (Palm Beach): drop at FLL on the drive south, on the way. Confirm her airline flies nonstop from that airport.

Blue Heron Bridge (Option ② only — optional, one dive)

The most different thing you could do: shallow (~20 ft) macro / "muck" diving — a treasure-hunt for weird little creatures (seahorses, octopus, frogfish, baby goliath grouper). Tide-critical — dive on high slack (enter ~1 hr before high tide). Corrected highs for our window: 7/26 7:19 PM · 7/27 8:02 PM · 7/28 8:00 AM + 8:43 PM. So on the Palm Beach days it's a sunset/night dive (night at the bridge is arguably the better critter dive — Pura Vida holds the night permit) or an early-morning dive the 28th. Skip if macro doesn't appeal.
